Initially, Threads, the app launched by Meta (formerly Facebook), showed great promise, gaining an overwhelming number of sign-ups with 5 million registrations within hours of its July 5 launch and surpassing 100 million within a week. It appeared that Threads could potentially outshine Twitter.

However, as time went on, Threads faced a significant decrease in daily active users, dropping from 49 million on July 7 to just 12 million on July 22, according to Similarweb, a trusted digital intelligence platform. Unfortunately, even on its busiest day, Threads couldn’t compete with Twitter’s massive user base, which consistently boasts over 100 million active daily users.

When Meta launched its Twitter alternative, Threads from Instagram, last year, it saw an initial surge of sign-ups from users curious about the new platform. However, over time, Threads has struggled to sustain strong user engagement and activity compared to the original Twitter platform it sought to mimic.

Several factors have contributed to Threads’ inability to compete with and replace Twitter in users’ minds. For starters, some users expressed dissatisfaction with the missing features on Threads, including the lack of a desktop version and limited capabilities for searching hashtags, phrases, and names compared to Twitter. The singular mobile experience felt restrictive.

Additionally, Elon Musk’s controversial changes to Twitter policies and increases in negative discourse since his takeover have turned some users off. However, instead of fleeing to Threads, many disappointed Twitter users have ultimately chosen to remain on the original platform despite its issues, finding Threads less relevant and engaging.

Meanwhile, the impact of Musk’s rebranding of Twitter to “X” remains to be seen. Some believe concerns about his management style will have a greater influence on activity than the name change itself.

In conclusion, while Meta and Mark Zuckerberg hoped to capitalize on Twitter’s instability by offering Threads as an alternative community, Threads has so far failed to draw substantial long-term interest and switching from Twitter users. As Meta continues working to enhance Threads’ capabilities and appeal, the app’s future remains uncertain in its ability to truly compete with or replace the original Twitter.
